How to start a combo
Complete at least one full row or column. A one-line clear starts the streak at ×1. Clearing two lines at once starts it at ×2, three lines at once starts it at ×3, and so on. The compact combo badge appears in the game HUD from ×2 upward so the screen stays clean when the streak is still at its first level.
The three-placement combo window
After a clear, the next clear must happen within the next three placements to preserve the streak. You may place one or two pieces without clearing anything and still continue the combo if the following placement clears a line. If three consecutive placements all fail to clear a line, the combo resets to zero.
| After your last clear | Result |
|---|---|
| Next placement clears | Combo continues |
| 1 miss, then a clear | Combo continues |
| 2 misses, then a clear | Combo continues |
| 3 misses in a row | Combo resets |
Multi-line clears jump the combo
The combo increases by the number of lines removed on that move, not simply by one move. If you are at ×4 and clear three lines together, the new streak is ×7. This is why a well-timed row-and-column clear can accelerate both score and combo progress.
How combo affects points
An active combo raises the value of the next line clear. For example, a two-line clear from a fresh streak earns a 30-point clear bonus. The same two-line clear while you are already at ×3 earns a 90-point clear bonus and moves the streak to ×5. Placement points for the piece are added separately.
Should you chase the combo at all costs?
No. A long streak is useful only if the board stays playable. Avoid filling a valuable 3×3 region or creating isolated holes just to keep a combo alive. When the board is tight, giving up the streak can be the correct decision if it restores flexibility for the next tray.
A practical combo routine
- After each clear, scan all three current pieces before moving again.
- Prefer a safe setup move if it creates a clear within the remaining combo window.
- Use multi-line clears when they also reopen the board, not just because they raise the streak faster.
- If preserving the combo would force a bad cavity, protect the board and let the streak reset.
